It’s easy to overlook. When someone leaves your business, you probably take away their keys, clear their desk, etc… but through all the commotion, you forgot to delete their login details.
Do they still have access to E-Mail? Cloud drives?
Of course, keeping these accounts active can cost money… the bigger issue is that these old logins tend to leave the door wide open for cyber criminals to get in.
Crazy statistic: almost half of businesses have accounts that are no longer actively managed.
This may sound silly, but many security breaches have been found to have started through an old (newly compromised) account using login details everyone has forgotten about.

So, what do you need to do?
Simple. Have someone spend a little time auditing all accounts and login details used by your business. Especially making sure old employees no longer have access. I’m not talking about making the account inactive… I’m talking about revoking all access so that they can’t attempt a “password reset” on the account.
The same concept applies to old web services or software that your business stopped using aging ago. How much of your data is still in those locations?!
From here on out… please, please, please make sure your business has a clear process for when people exit your business. And routinely review the applications and services your business uses.
