Microsoft Just Replaced Teams… with Teams

If you haven’t already noticed, there are two versions of Teams floating around: “Classic Teams” and “New Teams.” If you’ve done nothing, then you presently have “Classic Teams.”

So what’s the difference?

Efficiency. They have taken Teams and rebuilt it from the ground up. It’s now twice as fast and uses 50% less memory and 70% less disk space. And they’re not kidding. It’s speedy and has far fewer glitches. This performance boost includes Teams for Mac too.

Ok, so why didn’t they just upgrade the Teams I have?

That’s happening within a couple of months. Microsoft is allowing users to jump the gun and get the new version now if they’d like. You can also do nothing and wait for the automatic upgrade. But new features will only be available on the newer version.

So should I upgrade now?

Yes! Especially if you use Teams regularly. If nothing else, it should help reduce the sluggishness in the current version of Teams. Not to mention being able to join a meeting twice as fast.

The new version of Teams…

  • performs better with third-party apps
  • better at calling phones outside of Teams
  • way easier to join a new meeting

Microsoft has also completely redesigned the look and feel of the app, making it a bit easier to navigate to the tools you need most.

The reason the new Teams is so fast is that it shares resources with your web browser, utilizing Javascript and Microsoft’s Web2View technology.

The new Teams will also be the foundation for the AI-powered CoPilot push in Teams, like having an assistant summarize notes or compose bullet points in your chats or calls.

So… are you ready to switch to the new and improved Teams?

It’s already out and available for download right now. Or you can take a peak at the top left corner of your Teams app… if you see a “try the new Teams” option, then you can flip the switch and get it now.
