Earlier this year, WiFi 7 was officially released. Pre-launch buzz already suggested it would be much faster and more reliable. Did it live up to the hype?
Short answer: Yes! It’s really fast… but pricey.
Have you ever noticed that when connecting to WiFi, there is often a 2.4 GHz and 5GHz option for the same WiFi? Now there’s even a 6 GHz option!
Before WiFi 7, your device would only work on ONE frequency. Now, with WiFi 7, your WiFi 7 device can utilize ALL THREE frequencies at the SAME time. 🤯 This is called Multi-Link Operation (MLO).
In addition to MLO, there are other nerdy improvements that will further increase reliability, throughput, and speed when using the Internet, which will be great for streaming anything, gamers, and video calls.
It’s important to remember that to utilize a WiFi 7 router fully, you’ll need a device that also supports WiFi 7. The good news is that newer phones and devices will eventually roll out with WiFi 7 built-in! AND there’s a good chance that you can even upgrade your computer to support WiFi 7.
Of course, you can still connect your old WiFi devices to a WiFi 7 router, but those devices wouldn’t take advantage of all that WiFi 7 has to offer. They would still connect using the same old-fashioned method.
SO… do you neeeeeed Wi-Fi 7 to get faster internet? No.
We know of many ways to increase the reliability and speed of your Wi-Fi without any of the above. That is, unless you want to future-proof your WiFi network, then sure… it may not be a bad idea to consider putting a WiFi 7 router in place.
If you’re thinking about installing/upgrading WiFi or you’d like to talk a little more about it, then let us know! One thing I like just as much as cybersecurity… is good WiFi. Let’s do this.
