Google Says Sorry for Briefly Making Passwords Vanish

Google Chrome takes up over 52% of the web browser market share. That is an estimated 3.45 BILLION users.

For a small handful of those… approximately 15 million users… passwords stored in the Google Chrome password manager vanished.

You’d almost think Google took a page out of CrowdStrike’s “software update” strategy. Why? Because a Google Chrome product update earlier this week didn’t quite pass all its testing before being released into the wild.

When will they learn?

To their credit, Google did identity and fix the problem… 18 hours later. But during that window, users of Google Chrome couldn’t access their saved passwords. If they tried to enter a new password… it would follow the same disappearing act.

Thankfully, a product update has been pushed.

I’m not going to push hard on anyone to consider a proper Password Manager. But I will say… don’t save your passwords in any web browser. Firefox included.

Oh, and don’t use LastPass… they’ve been hit far too many times with security breaches.

Of course, if you or your business is looking to deploy a password manager and maintain both a private and business-level password database, let me know.
